Point Waylen Concept Plan; Federal Member for Tangney Sam Lim's Election Commitment of $850k for Foreshore Restoration at Point Waylen; World Migratory Bird Day event on Saturday 10 May 2025

Hello everyone,

We continue to be extremely busy with plans and roll-out of the Melville Bird Sanctuary (MBS). There are exciting developments to tell you about in this Newsletter, so stay with us and please keep reading:

Point Waylen Concept Plan

We had a very positive meeting with the City of Melville and the Department of Biodiversity Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) on 7 April about the Point Waylen Concept Plan for improving the environmental values of the area. We have long envisaged Point Waylen as the centrepiece of the MBS. The Point Waylen Concept Plan will be available shortly for community comment. Of course the underlying proviso is funding… meaning there’s a long way to go! But then last week, something exciting occurred.

Delivering Foreshore Restoration at Point Waylen

Last Wednesday 16 April, the Federal Member for Tangney, Sam Lim MP announced that a re-elected Albanese Labor Government would deliver funding of $850,000 to restore the foreshore at Point Waylen. The press release can be read at Delivering Foreshore Restoration at Point Waylen

This is way beyond what we’d imagined possible at this point and when combined with the recent election commitment of $145,000 through our State Member for Bicton, Lisa O’Malley MLA, totals almost $1million for the Melville Bird Sanctuary.

Sam Lim was a supporter of the MBS before his election to the Seat of Tangney in May 2022. He first contacted us to meet and take a walk at Point Waylen, being most interested to learn about the migratory birds that visit MBS each year. He has also attended our important milestone events eg. Opening of the Bird Viewing Platform at Point Waylen on 5 December 2022 and the launch of our MBS website on 11 May 2024. He is hardworking, high achieving and has his community’s best interests at heart.

At this point, we could not hope for better representation for the MBS at Federal and State levels of Government than Sam Lim and Lisa O’Malley.
