Guided Birdwatching Walks

Friends of MBS organises regular Birdwatching Walks and other events for the community, led by people well-versed in birds of the area. Keep an eye on the events schedule above to see when the next walk/event is taking place, or contact us if you’d like to enquire about organising a group tour.

World Migratory Bird Day @ Point Walter Spit in Bicton

Please join Friends of Melville Bird Sanctuary and WA Seabird Rescue along with members of our community, for a special event to celebrate our amazing migratory birds.‍ ‍

The theme for WMBD 2026 is: “Every Bird Counts - Your Observations Matter”. It highlights citizen science and the vital role of public participation in collecting data on migratory bird populations, their habitats, and the factors that affect them.

Of the 15+ migratory species recorded (eBird) at the Melville Bird Sanctuary over the past 5 years, most are on the Vulnerable/Endangered/Critically Endangered lists.

Programme of Events

8.30-8.50am - Welcome -Tom Lubin & Lisa O’Malley MLA

8.50-9.00am - Address from WA Seabird Rescue - Matt Watson

9.00-9.15am - Migratory Birds of MBS - Jenny Christenson

9.15-9.30am - Birdwatching Walk Registrations (bring binoculars, some spares on hand)

9.30-10.30am - Birdwatching Walk at Pt Walter - Gareth Evans & Brian Spittles

Ongoing from 8.30am - Education Stalls and displays as well as merchandise available from Birdlife WA and WA Seabird Rescue
